A quality manager is a middle or lower level manager responsible for the consistently high quality of the company's products or services. The specialist plans and implements measures to increase the company’s competitiveness, improves the enterprise’s technological processes, participates in employee training, and resolves issues of product certification and compliance with high quality standards.

History of the profession

The development of standardization began in Ancient Rome and affected units of measurement, sizes, shapes, building codes and regulations. Ancient China, India and Ancient Rus' had their own quality system, and they all depended on individual craftsmanship.

The quality breakthrough came after World War II in Japan, when manufacturers focused on defect prevention rather than inspection. In Russia, a shift in this emphasis began to occur only after the collapse of the USSR. The field of quality management in our country is at an active stage of development. Currently, some employers confuse quality specialists with quality control inspectors.

Responsibilities of a Quality Manager

The range of tasks included in the job responsibilities of a quality manager is very wide:

  • audit and description of enterprise business processes;
  • development of internal regulatory documents (instructions, regulations, procedures);

  • ensuring certification of the company’s activities in accordance with international and domestic standards.

Sometimes the functions of a quality manager include monitoring production stages, but in fact this is the responsibility of a quality control inspector.

  • higher education - preferably technical or MBA;
  • experience in the field of quality management (at least six months, more often from 3 years);

When hiring, it is important for the employer to know how motivated the new employee is. Especially if this is a young specialist who is just starting to work. Initially, motivation manifests itself when choosing a specialty. However, during the learning process it can change dramatically. To understand the motivation of future specialists in the field of quality, the editors of MMK asked two questions to students who study in specialties related to standardization, certification and quality management.

1. Why did you choose your specialty?

2. Are you going to work in your specialty after graduation?

LYUDMILA MEDVEDEVA,
5th year student at the Ural State Forestry University (Ekaterinburg), specialty “Quality Management”

1. I chose my specialty because I consider it necessary to develop the quality of goods and services in the modern market. Many enterprises began to take into account the quality of their products as a factor of competitiveness.

2. Yes, I plan to work in my specialty, because after graduation I want to take part in improving the quality of not only my life, but also the lives of those around me.

IVAN SHABARCHIN,
5th year student at St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, specialty “Quality Management”

1. To be honest, I chose my specialty completely spontaneously. For a long time I was looking for something that I really wanted to do later, so that I wouldn’t give up my studies due to lack of interest. As a result, after studying the labor market and assessing my abilities, I chose “Quality Management”, since I consider this area to be one of the most promising. After all, every year more and more companies are certified for compliance with ISO standards.

2. Of course I will. I don’t understand people who, after graduating from university, don’t even try to work in their specialty, especially if it is in demand on the market. Now in Russia, issues related to quality management and certification have begun to be given due attention, because this is the key to the successful development of any large organization.

KIRILL KRAVTSOV,
2nd year student of the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok), specialty "Standardization, metrology, certification"

1. I chose this specialty for rather unusual reasons. Firstly, it is just emerging in Russia, and something new is always interesting to me. Secondly, from 7th to 11th grade I studied at a technical lyceum and in the 10th grade I decided to become an engineer. And my relatives are also engineers. So the choice fell on this specialty.

2. The second question is difficult to answer because the future is not yet open to me. Rather, we can say that I would like and, thanks to my abilities, I can work in my specialty. However, this does not depend only on me - the competition is high, and there will be many people besides me. But I will do my best to get a job in my specialty.

REGINA BORODICH,
4th year student at St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University "LETI" named after. IN AND. Ulyanova (Lenina), specialty “Quality Management”

1. Initially, I was going to get a completely different profession, but when I came to the university, they told me about this specialty and offered to apply for it. I became interested, read the booklet and made a decision. Later I realized that my choice was correct.

2. To be honest, during the first two years of my studies I didn’t have a very clear idea of who I would end up being and what I would do after receiving my diploma. Only in my third year, when specialized subjects began, did I begin to understand what I was studying for. I'm very glad I chose this path! After graduating from university, I will definitely work in my specialty, because I believe that thanks to my activities I will be able to make the lives of those around me and this world, albeit not much, better.

ALEXANDER KOROED,
3rd year student of the Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University, specialty “Standardization, certification and metrology in the food industry”

1. This specialty seemed to me the most interesting and promising, taking into account the current economic situation, Russia’s accession to the WTO and the development of the Customs Union. I believe that the idea of improving quality will always be relevant, especially in the food industry.

2. I plan. I think there is a creative aspect to working in this field, which I enjoy.

ANNA GAVSHINA,
2nd year student at Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, specialty “Standardization and Certification”

1. Although I consider my specialty to be quite complex, it is very interesting and necessary, especially at the present time. There are currently few specialists in this field, so they are in great demand. And the salary in this area is very good, which is undoubtedly encouraging. In general, I like studying, and I do not regret that I entered this university and this particular specialty.

2. After completing my studies, I, of course, want to work in my specialty. It is interesting to get to know this field of activity better and open up new perspectives.

KSENIA CHURIKOVA,
5th year student at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, specialty “Standardization and Certification”

1. I consider my specialty modern and promising. Standardization in Russia is just beginning to develop, and it is interesting to participate in its development. Initially, I chose this specialty by chance, by hearsay, but over the last years of study, thanks to excellent teachers, I realized that I really like it.

2. I am already working in my specialty and am going to continue after graduation.

SERGEY AVERIN,
1st year student at the Moscow Energy Institute, specialty “Quality Management in Production and Technological Systems”

1. At first I studied at college with a specialty in “Communication networks and switching systems,” then I went to work as a designer of low-current systems, and entered the evening department at MPEI. I chose my specialty at the university based on the fact that it was closest to my specialty in college.

2. After graduation, I plan to work in my specialty, because my current work is indirectly related to it: we design according to state standards, draw up documents in accordance with the Unified System of Design Documentation (ESKD), etc.

ALEXANDER BOROVIKOV,
2nd year student at Omsk State Transport University, specialty “Quality Management”

1. My sister recommended this specialty to me. She graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in management in the banking sector, studied this area and said that specialists in the field of quality are valued. In addition, this is a very interesting specialty, and there are many options where you can go to work.

2. Yes, I plan to work in my specialty, and I hope I will succeed, because I think the work will be interesting and will not become a routine.

ANNA SHATKINA,
4th year student at Penza State University, specialty “Standardization and Certification”

1. I chose my specialty because I believe that it is in demand at the present time.

2. I plan to work in my specialty because it is promising.
